An 18-year-old man is facing more than a dozen criminal charges after allegedly backing into a police vehicle and attempting to flee the scene with a shotgun in a stolen vehicle in Neepawa.
Spruce Plains RCMP were called to a convenience store in Neepawa around 3:05 a.m. on Sunday for a report of possibly intoxicated man acting aggressively toward staff, RCMP said in a news release on Monday.
Officers drove up behind a parked truck located on Main Street West that was believed to belong to the suspect.
Moments later, the suspect began to back up the truck into the parked police vehicle while an officer was inside, Mounties said.
The suspect then moved forward in an attempt to manoeuvre the truck around the police vehicle while ignoring police commands to stop. As additional police arrived on scene, the suspect was unable to exit the parking lot and was arrested.
RCMP searched the truck and found a loaded sawed-off shotgun in the driver’s seat and an open can of alcohol in the driver’s cupholder, police said. Further investigation determined the truck had also been stolen.
The suspect refused to provide a breath sample to RCMP, police said.
Jacob Guiboche of Winnipeg has been charged with 19 criminal offences, including assault on a police officer with a weapon, operation of motor vehicle while impaired, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and unauthorized possession of a prohibited or restricted weapon.
Guiboche was also ticketed for driving while disqualified and having open liquor inside a motor vehicle. The two tickets carry a combined fine of $909, police said.
He was remanded into custody and appeared in Brandon’s provincial court on Monday.
