A new way of experiencing opera and classical music is coming to Brandon this weekend.
Flipside Opera will host a small-scale classical music performance at Section 6 Brewing Co. on Saturday as part of its Opera by the Pint series.
Operatic and classical music singers, accompanied by a pianist, will perform songs in an intimate setting with no stage or formal attire, while the audience can indulge in craft beer at the local brewery at 1126 Princess Ave.

Opera by the Pint is a casual way to experience the genre in an up-close and laid-back way, says Lisa Rumpel, co-artistic director of Flipside Opera and pianist.
“It’s kind of like opera karaoke,” Rumpel said. “It’s very off the cuff and it’s a lot more casual of an environment.”
She described the event as a gateway into the genre.
“It’s an easy way to get into it. You don’t have to pay for it. You’re not obligated to sit and be quiet the whole time. You can just come and have a drink,” Rumpel said.
“We feel like this is classical music for people who don’t know about or really like classical music,” she said.
Rumpel is a collaborative pianist, meaning she performs with singers and other instrumentalists or ensembles, rather than as a soloist.
As someone who was born and raised in rural Saskatchewan and now lives and works in Winnipeg, she said it’s important to visit other communities “that deserve access to the arts.”
“When you don’t have access to it, you don’t realize how much that music is just talking about the exact same stuff that pop talks about or folk music talks about,” Rumpel said.
“I can’t imagine what it would have been like if I had been a kid and heard this in my own town.”
The group of Flipside Opera performers will also visit Minnedosa on Sunday as part of its Opera by the Pint tour.
Rumpel said even after her 15-year long career, she’s still amazed by the power of an operatic singer.
“Being up close with those voices is pretty amazing,” she said.
Rumpel said she hopes the event will bring more people to the genre who might not have otherwise had a chance to experience it.
“It’s not just like ‘listen to this music,’ but it’s presented in a way that feels new and interesting and maybe challenging.”
The event is set to begin at 7 p.m. and is open to all ages and free to attend.
