A number of mayors have decided not to run for re-election in municipalities across western Manitoba.
Heads of council in Dauphin, Neepawa, Boissevain-Morton and Riverdale have bowed out of the race this year, leading to some acclamations and some contests ahead of the Oct. 28 civic election.
Final ballots were confirmed after candidate nominations closed on Tuesday.

Mayor David Bosiak is not running for re-election in the City of Dauphin after serving one term. A three-way race for the mayoral seat is underway between Coun. Steve Sobering and new candidates Keith Durston and Carter Taylor-Luke. Ten candidates entered the race for council; four are councillors running for re-election and six are new candidates. There are six council seats.
In the Town of Neepawa, Mayor Brian Hedley did not seek re-election this year after serving one term as mayor and one term as councillor. His departure leaves Coun. Darryl Gerrard to be acclaimed to the town’s highest office. Seven councillor candidates are vying for six council seats; four are new candidates and three are councillors seeking re-election.
Head of Council Judy Swanson’s decision not to run for re-election in the Municipality of Boissevain-Morton after two terms as mayor and one term as councillor has led to a race for head of council between Coun. Rob Adams and new candidate Terry Lucier. A pool of 10 candidates is vying for six council seats. Four are seeking re-election and the remainder are new candidates.
In Riverdale, Coun. Ian Dyer has been acclaimed as mayor following Mayor Heather Lamb’s decision not to run for re-election after one term. Six council seats are being contested by seven candidates — three are councillors seeking re-election and four are new candidates.
Meanwhile, the Town of Minnedosa is in a mayoral race with incumbent Mayor Ken Cameron up against new candidate Thomas Mathews. Eight candidates are running for the town’s six councillor seats, with three councillors seeking re-election and five new candidates.
In Minnedosa, a forum will be held on Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. at the Minnedosa Community Conference Centre. “The event will provide residents the opportunity to hear the candidates platform, ask questions and learn more about the candidates,” senior election official Danniele Carriere said.
Carberry Mayor Ray Muirhead has been acclaimed for another term, as has Souris-Glenwood Mayor Duane Davison.

Virden Mayor Tina Williams is in a race for re-election against Coun. Bruce Dunning. Eight candidates are vying for five council seats; four are councillors seeking re-election and four are new candidates. A mayor and councillor debate is slated for Oct. 22 in the Sunrise Banquet Hall at the Tundra Oil and Gas Place, with doors opening at 6:30 p.m.
Killarney-Turtle Mountain Mayor Janice Smith is in a race against Merv Tweed. Two councillors are running for re-election and nine new candidates are seeking spots on council. There are six council seats.
