The Brandon Teachers’ Association is set to host a public forum next week for candidates running for trustee seats in the Brandon School Division.

The forum, scheduled for Tuesday at the Evans Theatre at Brandon University, will host the 11 nominated candidates ahead of the Oct. 28 election.

It is intended to help voters understand reasons candidates seek trustee positions, BTA president Sandra Thompson said.

“We have invited all of the trustee candidates to come and answer questions that will be of interest to members of the public to make an informed decision on election day,” Thompson told the Sun. “No candidate had submitted regrets as of Thursday.”

Ten candidates are competing for eight city seats in the election, while rural Ward 2 Trustee Lorraine McConnell has been acclaimed.

The Ward 1 ballot includes five returning incumbents—Linda Ross, Duncan Ross, Kim Fallis, Kirk Carr and Shawna Mozdzen — and five newcomers — Bill Hogan, Jay Mahida, Brad Rusnak, Hosteen Bungon and Jim McCrae.

The forum is organized in partnership with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 737, The Brandon Sun, WCGtv and the university.

It will run from 7- 9 p.m. and feature three panellists — one each from the Sun, BTA and CUPE 737 — who will ask questions of the candidates.

Members of the public will also have an opportunity to submit questions during the event through the moderator.

“The event is open to the public and will operate on a walk-in basis, with no advance registration required,” Thompson said.

She said the BTA has traditionally hosted trustee forums and has partnered with other community organizations this year to broaden public participation and access to information about the candidates.

“This year, we’re following similar structures to the other candidate forums that are happening for municipal and mayoral candidates,” she said.

One change from previous BTA forums is that the moderator will come from outside the association rather than from the BTA, Thompson said.

She said the overall format will otherwise remain similar to previous trustee forums.

The forum comes as voters prepare to choose school board trustees who will oversee governance of the Brandon School Division.

Thompson said members of the public should attend and learn about the candidates before casting their ballots.

“We want to make sure that everyone who’s voting is informed about the decision that they’re making, and the trustees have a chance to share, I guess, their platform and why they’re running,” she said.
