A provincial court judge granted bail Tuesday to a 33-year-old man accused of threatening to kill employees at a Brandon bank.

A publication ban prohibits the Sun from describing evidence or submissions presented during the court hearing in Brandon.

The man faces charges of uttering threats to cause death, resisting arrest, assaulting a police officer and possession of a weapon.

The Brandon Police Service was notified Monday that the man was communicating with a business’s contact centre through a mobile app and was making “serious threats to the business and its employees,” police said in a news release on Tuesday.

A spokesperson for the police said the business was a bank institution.

The bank’s Brandon locations temporarily closed as a precaution while police investigated the threats.

The man was pulled over by police as he was driving near a residence south of Brandon.

Roads in the area were temporarily blocked off while officers dealt with the suspect, the release said.

Before he was taken into custody, he kicked an officer in the shin, police said. Police also found a knife located inside his vehicle with a sheath found on the floor.

Judge Patrick Sullivan granted his release with a number of conditions, including not to attend any of the bank’s locations or communicate electronically with any member of the bank except as required for banking purposes.

His next court appearance is on Oct. 20.

During the man’s arrest, his father drove to the scene to try to convince him to exit his vehicle, police said.

The father was initially calm, but his behaviour later escalated and he was arrested and charged with obstructing justice, police said.

The father was released on a notice to appear in court on Dec. 14.
