A police traffic blitz this week in Westman took four commercial vehicles out of service and left dozens of drivers with tickets.
The RCMP conducted an operation along the Yellowhead Highway and Highway 10 in response to concerns by residents about speeding, commercial vehicle traffic and highway safety in the area.
“Motorists are being reminded to slow down, particularly when approaching or passing emergency vehicles,” RCMP said in a news release on Friday. “Our priority is to encourage safe driving, respond to community concerns and make sure everyone gets home safely.”
The efforts took place Tuesday and Wednesday.
RCMP motor carrier enforcement conducted 34 commercial vehicle inspections, resulting in 15 vehicles failing inspection and four taken out of service, police said. Officers issued 22 tickets and three warnings.
Spruce Plains RCMP accompanied motor carrier enforcement officers and issued 34 tickets for traffic offences.
A total of 16 tickets were issued to drivers who failed to slow down when approaching motor carrier enforcement officers who were performing inspections and had their emergency lights activated, RCMP said.
The fine for this offence is $298.
“As a reminder, the speed limit is 60 km/h for motorists when passing emergency vehicles that are stopped with lights activated on highways with posted speed limits of 80 km/h or higher,” police said.
The speed limit lowers to 40 km/h on highways where the speed limit is below 80 km/h.
RCMP said the “biggest offender” caught during the blitz was a 22-year-old man from Brandon who was pulled over after being clocked at a speed of 136 km/h in a 100 km/h zone, and got a $521 ticket. The man had reportedly been given a warning 20 minutes earlier after failing to slow down when approaching an emergency vehicle when its lights were activated.
Other offences included driving without a valid licence, driving while disqualified, driving an unregistered vehicle, illegal tinting of driver-side window and failure to have a front licence plate.
