Advance voting in Brandon reached an all-time high this month, shattering past municipal election records.

A total of 2,386 ballots were cast in advance polls for mayor, ward councillor and school board trustees on Oct. 14, 17 and 22, senior election official Heather Ewasiuk confirmed Tuesday.

The total, which also included a senior housing mobile advance poll, is 920 more than the previous record of 1,466 ballots cast in 2014.

It also represents a sharp increase from the 376 advance votes recorded in 2022.

Advance voting in 2018 attracted 655 voters over three days, while 2010 recorded 937 voters over two days.

This year’s advance polls saw 706 ballots cast at city hall on Oct. 14, 617 at the Keystone Centre’s Pioneer Lounge on Oct. 17, 696 at city hall on Oct. 22 and 367 at the senior housing mobile advance poll.

Ewasiuk previously attributed the strong turnout to the competitive mayoral race, contested council seats and growing public engagement with municipal politics.

“We have two solid candidates for the mayoral race, which usually encourages people to get out,” she said.

Ewasiuk also pointed to the number of contested positions compared with previous elections, when several seats were decided by acclamation.

“People just seem to be a little more interested in the politics of the day,” she said. “People are becoming more interested. I guess engaged is the word to use.”

Voting day is today.
