An outgoing Brandon councillor has asked the city to set aside $250,000 in next year’s budget to enhance Rideau Park.
Coun. Glen Parker at his final meeting last week used artificial intelligence to generate images depicting the type of attraction he would like to see at the east-end park, with a lighted water tower and a photo area.
The motion was approved 9-2.

“This is a really popular area — Rideau Park (is) annually voted best park in the city, and in the winter, it’s become a really, really popular toboggan hill,” the Ward 9 councillor said.
“It’s a pretty bland looking scenery, and I think we have an opportunity to make something that’s good (into) really, really good for the city of Brandon.”
Using a slideshow, Parker showed trees lit up with faint lights and bright blue lights illuminating the old water tower.
“I just wanted administration to take a look at that,” Parker said, adding it would give people from outside Brandon one more reason to stay longer in the city or make a special trip.
Coun. Greg Hildebrand (Ward 5), one of the councillors to vote against the motion, said he wonders about the future of the area if the city eventually builds a second waterpark at the site to replace the aging Kinsmen Centennial Pool. The city is currently pursuing the construction of a new outdoor pool at the Keystone Centre, with some councillors tentatively proposing a second pool at Rideau Park.
Hildebrand during the meeting jokingly asked when council would get to vote against the item at budget.
Coun. Bruce Luebke (Ward 6), who also voted against the motion, raised concerns to staff about recoating and reinspecting the water tower.
Acting city clerk Alexis Sukaroff said Parker’s motion already specified that city staff will come back to council with “additional information” by the end of March.
The city’s budget deliberations take place in late January.
The $250,000 referred to budget would be considered a “placeholder,” according to the meeting’s agenda.
