A 31-year-old man received a suspended sentence of 18 months of probation for assaulting a domestic partner after a Manitoba judge said his actions were a “serious breach of trust.”
Chance Miller pleaded guilty to assaulting his girlfriend around 6 p.m. on March 26 after the former couple got into an argument inside an apartment on 13th Street in Brandon.
“When a man hurts a woman that he’s in a relationship with, he’s not demonstrating that he’s strong or powerful,” provincial court Judge Shauna Hewitt-Michta said on Thursday.

“He’s showing weakness and an inability to control himself. And so, I strongly suggest that you take a look at that issue and that you take advantage of the help that’s offered to you through probation.”
Crown attorney Andrew Seiklicki said Miller pushed the woman, causing her to fall and cut her forehead open on a shelf.
“The cut was bleeding, which was tended to by first responders. Police then arrived on scene, and Mr. Miller was placed under arrest,” Seiklicki said.
Miller also pleaded guilty on Thursday to failing to attend court on Aug. 4.
The Crown recommended Miller receive a suspended sentence of one year of supervised probation for the assault and that his six days of enhanced credit for time served at the Brandon Correctional Centre account for missing his court date.
Defence lawyer Bob Harrison recommended his client be sentenced to a conditional discharge for both offences.
He said Miller has taken responsibility for his actions through a guilty plea.
Hewitt-Michta said she would give him credit for his plea, but he can expect jail time if he’s back in court for an assault charge involving an intimate partner. She also accepted he was punished enough for missing court by spending multiple days in custody.
“You’re going to learn from this. We’re not going to see you back in court again,” she said.
Miller’s probation conditions include not contacting the victim or being within 50 metres of her home, school, work or place of worship.
