Over the weekend, public health officials advised parents of École New Era School that a potential outbreak of COVID-19 has been uncovered in a Grade 4/5 classroom.

The outbreak has since been confirmed by public health and the spread is considered limited to the one Grade 4/5 cohort, a Brandon School Division representative told the Sun Monday.

BSD is moving that specific class to remote learning until at least Nov. 22, when the students and staff may be eligible to return to in-person instruction.

The BSD official would not disclose how many people had contracted COVID-19 due to the outbreak.

As of Monday evening, the exposure at New Era has not been registered on the province’s online outbreak chart or the Manitoba government’s latest COVID-19 bulletin.

The Monday bulletin did reveal that a recent outbreak at Riverheights School has been declared over.

BSD officials confirmed on Nov. 8 that a COVID-19 outbreak had been uncovered at Riverheights School, impacting two kindergarten classes that share the same indoor space.

As a result, these kindergarten classrooms were moved to remote learning, although they are scheduled to resume in-person instruction tomorrow.

On Friday, the province registered eight COVID-19 cases attached to the Riverheights outbreak, which was impacting three staff and five “non-staff.”

Elsewhere in the division, COVID-19 cases at École Harrison were confirmed in Grade 1, 3 and 4 classrooms.

According to the province’s COVID-19 tracker map for K-12 schools, at least six other BSD institutions are currently contending with coronavirus cases that they acquired within two weeks prior to Nov. 9.

This includes Linden Lanes School, Meadows School, Betty Gibson School, Green Acres School, Prairie Hope High School and Kirkcaldy Heights School.

The Manitoba government has recorded 997 COVID-19 cases in K-12 schools since the 2021-22 academic year began on Sept. 7.
