The Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba’s search for a new general manager is finally over, with the non-profit organization announcing Monday that Westman entrepreneur Mark Humphries has agreed to take on this important role.

The Provincial Exhibition has been without a general manager since June 2020, when Ron Kristjansson retired from the position after holding it for six years.

While the search for his replacement was constantly complicated by the COVID-19 pandemic, Humphries is happy to join the organization just in time to help plan for the 2022 Manitoba Ag Ex event that is taking place in October.

Submitted Westman entrepreneur Mark Humphries poses for a photo in front of Brandon's Dome Building, which serves as the headquarters for the Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba. The Provincial Exhibition announced on Monday that Humphries will serve as the non-profit organization's new general manager.

“I look forward to joining the hard-working team at the Provincial Exhibition and playing a part in the magic they bring to Westman and Manitoba as a whole,” he said in a news release.

As general manager, Humphries will be responsible for overseeing the organization’s day-to-day operations, while also providing leadership to staff and adhering to various policies and budgets.

Even though Humphries hasn’t held any position with the Provincial Exhibition before, president Kathy Cleaver remains confident that he will do the job justice.

“His energy, enthusiasm and regional experience is a great asset for us,” she said on Monday. “Our board of directors and I have no doubt that Mark will do a great job as part of the Provincial Ex team.”

Humphries and his family emigrated from England to Manitoba in 2008 to raise cattle and sheep.

Since then, the family has established a greenhouse, acquired a variety of animals — including zebras, lemurs, emus, wallaroos, ostriches and horses — and opened the Westwood Ranch Garden Centre near Elkhorn.

After turning this facility into a popular tourist destination, the Humphries family announced on Friday that they will be shutting down the animal ranch as of Aug. 31, and will be running the facility as a retail garden centre and greenhouse moving forward.

“Closing at the end of August will provide us the time to make sure our animals are settled in their new homes before the winter months,” Friday’s statement read.

“While we are sad to be coming to the end of an era for both our family and our business, we are looking forward to the 2023 growing season for the Garden Centre and Greenhouse and the new opportunities this refocusing of our business will bring.”

During his time living in Westman, Humphries was also known for performing in the big band he started in England called the Mark Humphries Orchestra, which featured 18 musicians at one time.

Depending on the show, Humphries would play anything from the trombone to the trumpet to the clarinet, while also providing vocals.
