Let’s Do Something (Oct. 1, 2021)

After a lengthy hiatus, The Brandon Sun has decided to run its Let’s Do Something section once again.

While the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact our day-to-day lives here in Westman, organizations throughout the region have found safe and responsible ways to provide in-person events related to arts, sports, culture, business and general recreation.

Admittedly, this dynamic could change now that Manitoba is entering its fourth wave of the pandemic, especially with outdoor events becoming less and less of a possibility as winter approaches.

But Westman residents have proven themselves to be both resilient and flexible throughout the last 19 months, which means they will continue to organize arts and entertainment events while also keeping public health restrictions in mind.

TODAY

• 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. — Brandon’s Truth and Reconciliation Week festivities will wrap up with a variety of events and activities taking place at the Riverbank Discovery Centre grounds. This includes an outdoor Kairos Blanket Exercise at the Fusion Credit Union stage (10 a.m. to noon), an Indigenous arts market (noon), readings from the writings of Ojibwe author and journalist Richard Wagamese (noon to 2 p.m.) and some closing ceremonies with Sioux Valley Dakota Nation Elder Frank Tacan (2 p.m.).

• 6 p.m. — BU men’s volleyball: The Brandon University Bobcats will be going head-to-head with the University of Winnipeg Wesmen at the school’s Healthy Living Centre. This match is part of a larger volleyball tournament that is taking place at BU throughout the weekend.

• 7 p.m. — The Brandon Wheat Kings will be taking on the Winnipeg ICE in their first game of the 2021-22 WHL regular season. All persons attending this home opener must show proof of vaccination to enter the Keystone Centre. Mask use is also mandatory in all areas of the facility.

 

SATURDAY

• 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. — Riverbank Fall Fest: To help celebrate the fall, the Riverbank Discovery Centre will be hosting a variety of events throughout the day, including its final market of the season (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.) and a free screening of the film “Coraline” at the Fusion Credit Union Stage (starting at 7 p.m.).

• 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. — LEGO club: Members of the Western Manitoba Regional Library will be hosting a series of LEGO-building challenges in their downtown Brandon branch for kids age five and up. To sign up, please email programs@wmrl.ca.

• Noon to 4 p.m. — Boissevain Show and Shine car show: All vehicles welcome. All proceeds from this event will go to the Boissevain Morton Fire Department. The action is set to take place at Unrau Building Supply located on William Road.

• 1 to 11:30 p.m. — Dauphin drive-in movie marathon: The RM of Dauphin is screening a trio of movies at the Selo Ukraina Upper Campground throughout the afternoon and evening, including “The Boss Baby: Family Business” (2 p.m.), “Cruella” ( 6 p.m.) and “F9: The Fast Saga” (9 p.m.). While this event is free, attendees are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item for the Dauphin and District Food Bank.

• 2 to 4 p.m. — Jessie Jannuska exhibition: The Killarney Turtle Mountain Arts Council is hosting a grand opening for a new exhibition featuring the works of Jessie Jannuska, an interdisciplinary visual artist from Winnipeg. This new exhibit, titled “Love Letter to Myself” in English, is a showcase of Jannuska’s work, which is rooted in female Indigenous empowerment. “Love Letter to Myself” will be on display at Killarney’s Heritage Home for the Arts from Oct. 5-29.

• 6:30 p.m. — CWE wrestling in Gladstone: Members of Canadian Wrestling’s Elite will be taking over the Gladstone Community Centre to produce some content for the company’s TV show, “CWE Adrenaline.” This event will feature a CWE Central Canadian Championship match (Shaun Martens vs. Travis Cole), a CWE Hardcore Champion match (EZ Ryder vs. “Big” Bobby Schink) and a Junior Heavyweight Division match (Chad Daniels vs. Tyler James). This TV taping is closed to the general public with access being given to registered guests only. Ticket prices range from $26 for VIP first priority access to $21 for general registration in advance to $24 for tickets purchased on the day of the event.

• 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. — Scarecrow Social: The main event of the 30th edition of Souris Scarecrow Days will take place at the Souris Curling Club and is set to feature plenty of food, drinks, music and trivia. This is a cash-only event and minors will not be allowed in.

 

SUNDAY

• 3:15 p.m. — Post-secondary men’s soccer action, BU vs. ACC: This soccer match between the Brandon University Bobcats and the Assiniboine Community College Cougars will take place at the Healthy Living Centre.

• Noon to 4 p.m. — Souris Vintage car show: Just one of several events that comprises Souris Scarecrow Days 2021. Takes place in the public parking lot between Crescent Avenue and 5th Avenue. Will also feature music and a 50/50 draw.

 

TUESDAY

• 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. — BU walk-in vaccination clinic: First and second doses of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines will be given out at BU’s Harvest Hall. Free coffee will also be provided.

• 3:30 to 5 p.m. — Killarney Fall Youth Art Series: The Killarney Heritage Home for the Arts is hosting a series of classes throughout the fall and winter to help K to 8 students express themselves artistically. This kickoff event will teach kids how to make a back-to-school class quilt, while also leaving a bit of time for crayon and watercolour exercises. 

WEDNESDAY

• 10:30 to 11 a.m. — Storytime in the park: Members of the Western Manitoba Regional Library will be reading stories and providing snacks in Brandon’s Princess Park. This event is free to attend and does not require any registration. However, the session could be cancelled due to the weather.

• 1 to 3 p.m. — BU walk-in vaccination clinic: First and second doses of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines will be given out at BU’s Harvest Hall. Free coffee will also be provided.

 

THURSDAY

• 6:30 p.m. — Leaf Rapids show: The Winnipeg-based folk band, which includes Juno award-winning musician Keri Latimer, will be performing at Killarney’s Shamrock Recreation Centre. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for youth (under 18).

 

UPCOMING

• Oct. 8-11 — MQHA Thanksgiving Classic: This four-day competition, organized by the Manitoba Quarter Horse Association, is taking place over the long holiday weekend at the Westoba Credit Union Agricultural Centre of Excellence Arena.

• Oct. 27-30 — Manitoba Ag Ex: The Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba is bringing back the largest all-breeds cattle show in Manitoba after a lengthy hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Just like in past years, this four-day event will take place at the Keystone Centre and will feature visitors from Saskatchewan and Alberta.
