Nesbitt appointed natural resources minister

Another Westman MLA was added to the provincial cabinet Thursday.

Riding Mountain Progressive Conservative MLA Greg Nesbitt was appointed as the new minister of natural resources and northern development, following the resignation of former minister Scott Fielding.

“Minister Nesbitt is a longtime business owner and community leader and understands the importance rural economic development plays in building a strong and vibrant province. I am confident Minister Nesbitt will play an important role as we continue with our efforts for economic recovery and growth and building hope and opportunity for all Manitobans,” Premier Heather Stefanson said in a news release.

In addition to that appointment, Sport, Culture and Heritage Minister Andrew Smith is now also the minister responsible for the Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries Corporation.

Daly House to debut new exhibit

Brandon’s Daly House Museum will unveil a new outdoor exhibit on July 21 that explores the history of the site from pre-settlement to modern times.

Titled “A Landscape History,” this 16-panel display will feature various photographs from the museum’s private collection and other sources, showcasing how the building came to be in 1882, with it being originally designed as a home for two prominent families — the Dalys and the Coldwells.

The building later became a children’s shelter for several decades before being converted into a museum in 1976 to collect, preserve and promote Brandon’s history.

Museum officials are planning to debut the new permanent exhibit during a garden party that will feature cocktails, live music, a silent auction and artwork from prolific Westman painter Weiming Zhao.

This event is also meant to help generate money for the museum, because fundraising opportunities have been few and far between since the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tickets for the Daly House Museum’s “Gathering in the Garden: A Landscape Celebration” event are $40 for museum members and $45 for non-members. These tickets can be purchased online through eventbrite.ca, by calling 204-727-1722 or by visiting the museum in person at 122 18th St. during regular business hours.

This July 21 event is scheduled to begin around 7 p.m.

Summer bird count underway in Rivers

Westman Naturalists is running its summer bird count in Rivers all day today.

Participants will be using the same circle as the Christmas count and are expecting more bird species this time of year than last January, according to the group’s website.

Participants will be recording species they see, how many and their location to track migrations and species in specific areas.
