COVID restrictions at health facilities relaxed

Visitation principles in care homes, clinics and other care settings are being changed by the province due to lower COVID-19 transmission rates.

Shared Health announced in a news release starting today, the number of designated caregivers involved in the day-to-day care of a patient will go from two to as many as four. Those designated caregivers will also no longer be required to wear eye protection during visits or while caring for their loved ones. Care homes will have more room for social visitors as well.

Two caregivers are now permitted to take a patient into the emergency room instead of just one, depending on the discretion of the site and available space. Cancer patients can have someone accompany them to some types of appointments. Access to outpatient cancer treatments, including chemotherapy, will remain restricted.

Other changes include newly admitted residents to personal care homes will be required to quarantine, instead of isolate, for 10 days. They are allowed to leave their room during this period of time as long as they wear a mask and/or physical distancing is maintained.

Masks are no longer required for outdoor appointments but will still have to be worn inside.

These changes come as evidence of lower transmission levels are being reflected by a decrease in staff sick time, a reduction in the number of in-facility outbreaks and a drop in COVID hospitalization rates, the release stated.

Construction to reduce lanes on 18th Street

Construction on the Daly Overpass will reduce a stretch of 18th Street to one lane in each direction between July 4-18.

The lane reduction will start at 6 a.m. Monday on the street between Princess Avenue and Parker Boulevard.

Vehicles travelling south on 18th Street will not be allowed to turn east onto Rosser Avenue, according to the province. They will instead need to follow a detour.

Pacific Avenue is expected to remain closed until approximately December 2022, according to the province.

The construction will see a new Daly Overpass built, which will have four lanes and a separate pedestrian and active transportation bridge. The new bridge design will also include new on and off ramps to connect 18th Street with Pacific Avenue, new pathways and sidewalk and pavement upgrades.
