For the second straight day, Premier Brian Pallister accused three Manitoba NDP MLAs of having travelled during the holidays, but this time directly accused NDP Leader Wab Kinew of being one of them.

During a Wednesday morning media conference, Pallister was asked again about why he was not punishing Radisson MLA James Teitsma of his own party for road tripping to British Columbia and back during the holidays.

“Well, I understand that three NDP members, including their leader, travelled out of the province as well … so to be fair I think you could ask Mr. Kinew what he’s going to do to discipline his colleagues and himself,” Pallister replied.

The premier went on to say that if three times as many NDP MLAs had travelled than from his own party, it is a more significant problem for Kinew than him. He also said he was proud that no members of his cabinet travelled outside of the country, unlike ministers in several other jurisdictions.

The accusation was first made on Tuesday, but no proof of the premier’s assertions was provided on either Tuesday or Wednesday. Olivia Billson, the premier’s press secretary, did not respond to an email asking for further details on the matter by deadline.

In a phone interview on Tuesday, Kinew told the Sun that none of the MLAs in his party had travelled since code red restrictions were put in place in mid-November.

The Sun reached out again to the NDP after Pallister’s second round of allegations.

“Can confirm that no NDP MLAs travelled out of the province during the holidays or within the Code Red restrictions,” Manitoba NDP communications director Emily Coutts said via email. “This is a pretty obvious attempt on the premier’s part to distract from the fact that his own caucus member travelled out of province over the holidays and he is refusing to discipline him.”

Manitoba Liberal Leader Dougald Lamont also said on Tuesday that none of the party’s three MLAs, including himself, left the province during the holidays.

Pallister denied on Wednesday that the province’s top civil servant, David McLaughlin, working from his Ottawa home hampered the province’s vaccination preparation work, saying that the province could vaccinate every consenting Manitoban by the end of March if the federal government provided enough vaccine doses.
