Before announcing a $100,000 pledge to Samaritan House Ministries, Tim McKay couldn’t help but offer a quick fake-out.
The Kinsmen Club of Winnipeg president had phoned Samaritan House Ministries executive director Barbara McNish regarding an application they’d put in for a $50,000 grant.
He initially let McNish know they weren’t giving her organization the $50,000, which she accepted with grace before he added: “We really want to give you $100,000.”
“I was just really blown away because you know that this is a million-dollar project, and slowly over time it’s crept up a bit here and there,” McNish said of their ongoing Raise The Roof campaign.
“It was just so amazing, and not only them but everybody who has been helping out.”
The campaign is an ongoing effort to renovate the organization’s Safe and Warm shelter in downtown Brandon — an effort that strives to not only repair the roof but also increase the shelter’s capacity and make the space safer by improving air quality.
With various grants coming in for the million-dollar project, the public ask has been pared down to $280,000, of which $131,900 had been raised as of Saturday.
The $100,000 Kinsmen Club of Winnipeg grant they received Friday comes as a result of the popular Jackpot Bingo sales. The club has also pledged a matching grant of up to $100,000 for the Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba this year to help it weather the second year of COVID-related cancellations.
The Kinsmen Club of Brandon has also been active, McNish said, noting they dropped off men’s hygiene kits Friday and are contributing proceeds from recent “flockings” toward the organization.
The flocking effort has volunteers place pink flamingo decorations on the yards of people to help celebrate special occasions, for which recipients pledge a donation.
