After another busy year, the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba is ready to unveil its final two exhibits of the decade today.

On display in the main gallery will be the 15th annual members’ show, made up of more than 150 works of art from more than 50 members of the gallery.

There is a mishmash of styles and techniques on display, but there are some Christmas and holiday-themed paintings to help celebrate the season.

Many of the art pieces from the show will be for sale. Curator Alyssa Fearon told the Sun on Wednesday that prices for the art will range from $50 to $1,000.

“It’s an opportunity for us at the gallery to celebrate the work and creativity of the arts community in the Brandon and Westman region,” Fearon said.

All of the pieces of art in the show are from Westman artists. Most of the pieces are new and have yet to be shown in public.

Over in the community gallery is a show titled “The Bookies Gallery.”

This exhibit is being put on by a local art collective celebrating its 10th anniversary. The group takes old books and repurpose them for their art.

Fearon said that the group first met while taking classes at the AGSM.

She recently celebrated her one-year anniversary of working at the AGSM and believes the members show will have the most works of any exhibit during both her tenure in Brandon and her entire career.

The reception launching both events takes place tonight at 7:30 p.m. and there is no charge for attendance.

There is also a “lunch and look” event on Friday, during which select artists from the exhibits will be showing off and explaining their works to visitors. That event takes place at noon and is also free.

The Bookies’ show is on until Dec. 14 and the members’ show is on until Dec. 15.

In the new year, the AGSM’s first two shows of the new decade start on Jan. 16. Those exhibits are titled “This Too Shall Pass” and “Flags of Unsung Countries.”
