More than 130 people gathered at the Victoria Inn on Wednesday for the 2022 Brandon University Foundation luncheon — the first major in-person event the institution has held since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

Like in past years, the luncheon was designed to give BU pupils the opportunity to speak out about the financial backing they’ve received from the foundation, with Wednesday’s guests of honour being graduating students Joshua Beaudin and Nicole Russel.

“The generosity and support provided by the BU Foundation is truly a blessing, especially with the difficult and unexpected few years during the pandemic,” Russel said.

“I feel so grateful to be a student at a university that has so many supporters who are rooting for the success of BU students and opening many opportunities for us, both during our degree and afterwards.”

According to a followup news release from BU, the foundation raised more than $3.3 million in 2021, with $1.9 million going directly to students in the form of scholarships and bursaries.

The BU Foundation now stewards nearly $81.5 million in total assets and has disbursed more than $65 million in support since its inception in 1980.

The foundation luncheon marks the university’s first major in-person event since it hosted a Three-Minute Thesis competition in early March 2020.

After two years of instituting varying degrees of public health requirements on campus, BU moved to Phase Gold of its reopening strategy on April 29.

Not only does this mean the school’s vaccine mandate is no longer in place, but university staff and students are no longer required to wear masks on campus. Physical distancing requirements and COVID-related signage were also removed.

Because of this pivot, BU is now organizing a variety of in-person events once again, including Wednesday’s Foundation luncheon and next week’s spring convocation.
