Brandon University is set to honour six Manitoba educators for their contributions to research and teaching during Thursday’s spring convocation.

According to a Monday news release, the current crop of award winners from BU includes professors Doug Ramsey, Rachel Herron and Rick Baker, who are all receiving Senate Awards during this virtual ceremony.

Meanwhile, BU officials will also hand out three Distinguished Teaching Awards to K-12 educators Penny Dixon (Hamiota Elementary School), Kristin Harris (Mennonite Brethren Collegiate Institute) and Yuri Sudermann (Dufferin School).

Monday’s news release also went into more detail about the reasons each educator is being recognized.

For example, Ramsey and Herron are both getting Senate Awards for “excellence in research” within the Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Science, respectively.

While Ramsey’s interests are more varied — focusing on areas like tourism, agricultural restructuring and downtown revitalization— Herron’s research is more geared toward mental health and the quality of life in rural regions.

For his work in the Political Science department, Baker will receive his Senate Award for “excellence in teaching,” having established a reputation for “going above and beyond in his determination to connect with students.”

All three Senate Awards will be presented in faculty-specific portions of Thursday’s convocation.

Monday’s news release also specified that the winners of this year’s Distinguished Teaching Awards (Dixon, Harris and Sudermann) were nominated by their principals and members of their respective student body, who wanted to highlight how these individuals have “inspired students in their school to continue their education.”

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s BU spring convocation ceremony is being presented in a pre-recorded video, which will be posted to brandonu.ca/convocation on Thursday at 2 p.m.

Links to the virtual ceremony will also be shared on social media and the video will remain online perpetually.

Outside of handing out awards to the six previously mentioned educators, BU officials will also be conferring two honorary doctorates during Thursday’s event.

Both Indigenous entertainer Tom Jackson and chief public health officer Dr. Brent Roussin will receive a Doctor of Laws degree for the contributions they’ve made to their respective fields.

Plus, former BU professor Meir Serfaty will be on hand to accept a Lifetime Achievement Award after spending nearly 50 years teaching at the university.

Thursday’s festivities will also feature an appearance from Canadian Sen. Mary Jane McCallum, who was appointed as BU’s newest chancellor on May 6.
