Prairie Blend and das Femmes are set to team up for a Christmas concert next week that will bring both groups’ voices together to usher in the season.

Deanna Ginn, conductor of the men’s choir Prairie Blend, said the “basically annual” collaboration between the two groups is a celebration of each group’s musical talent and combining them.

“I think we really enjoy collaborating with one another, just for the musical satisfaction, selfishly, but I think at this time of year it’s nice to bring ensembles together.”

Part of the proceeds from the concert at Knox United Church on Friday will also go toward supporting Samaritan House Ministries.

“It’s a nice way for us to come together as musicians and as friends, and also to give back to the community,” Ginn said.

The show will feature both upbeat carol favourites, but also some more serene ones to give people a chance to “breathe in the season,” she said. One of the songs, “Yuletide Fires,” features bits of wisdom about enjoying the winter season.

“You can hear some imitations of winter winds and sort of the whole gambit of emotions that someone who really understands Canadian winter can write.”

Naomi Russell, one of the singers in the female choir group das Femmes, said the concert is a great chance to hear the men’s and women’s voices singing in unison, but also separately.

“I love hearing men’s voices sing, that richness and depth that you don’t really get in the women’s. Myself and my other two low alto colleagues, we give it some depth that way, but there’s nothing like the men’s voices and the richness of that sound.”

Russell said the joint concert at Christmastime is a natural thing to do, and it also means both groups only have to prepare half a show.

She advised concert-goers to arrive early as the show is always popular, and both choirs have significant followings in Brandon. Tickets are $10 at the door.
