The Brandon School Division announced two new COVID-19 exposures on Monday night, with individuals from Vincent Massey High School and Kirkcaldy Heights School being impacted.
According to a news release from BSD, the exposure at Vincent Massey involves at least one confirmed case in a Grade 9 classroom and on school bus “Red 8.” The individual(s) in question may have been infectious on Sept. 27-29.
Meanwhile, Kirkcaldy Heights confirmed at least one case in a Grade 3 class, with the individual(s) possibly being infected on Sept. 29.
In both cases, BSD officials state that “the infection was not believed to be acquired at school.”
Monday marks the first time that Kirkcaldy Heights has registered a COVID exposure since the beginning of the current K-12 academic year, which began on Sept. 7.
However, BSD’s first major COVID exposure of the 2021-22 fall term belongs to Vincent Massey, with at least one person in a Grade 12 class having possibly contracted the virus between Sept. 9 and Sept. 10 (according to a Sept. 12 release from the division).
Since then, individuals from other BSD schools have also tested positive for the virus, including: Riverheights School (Grade 1 class), Betty Gibson School (Grade 1/2 class), École New Era School (Grade 5/6 class), Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School (Grade 10) and École O’Kelly School (three separate grades).
Brandon’s Christian Heritage School recently endured an outbreak tied to the delta variant, which peaked at 17 cases as of Friday and forced one Grade 3 class to transition to remote learning.
However, public health officials announced on Monday that this particular outbreak is now over, with the Grade 3 class having returned to in-person instruction.
Elsewhere in the Prairie Mountain Health region, the Park West School Division is also enduring a batch of new COVID cases.
Miniota School actually shut down on Tuesday after discovering that four new students had tested positive for the virus, bringing their new total up to five.
Birtle Collegiate also registered a new COVID exposure on Monday, which involved at least one person who used “bus route M12” Sept. 29-Oct. 1.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the province has identified a total of 251 COVID-19 cases in Manitoba K-12 schools since the beginning of the fall term.
Of these 251 cases, 220 cases are students and the remaining 31 are school staff.
This marks a significant jump over the 181 cases that the province recorded on Monday.
