Graduating students from Elton Collegiate were visited by a magic school bus of sorts on Thursday.
Starting at 9 a.m. and going until 3:15 p.m., principal Mark Geekie, five teachers and the school division’s transportation supervisor drove more than 270 kilometres across Westman to deliver customized graduation signs to their graduates.
“We thought it would be a nice gesture to drive around to graduates’ homes and actually drop them off in person for them,” Geekie said. All of the signs were custom-made to have graduates’ photos on them.
Mecca Productions’ Lisa Vasconcelos was instrumental in setting things up activities for grads, Geekie said.
He said the reason behind the visits was to do as much as they can to honour graduates with large-scale ceremonies off the table due to COVID-19. It was apparently a big hit.
“The reactions were fantastic,” he said. “Everyone was very pleased to see their sign. A lot of the graduates weren’t home because they’re working full-time jobs, so we didn’t expect everyone to be home. But if they were, they were very appreciative and it was so nice to see them. We’ve been missing the students a lot. It’s been a real challenging situation.”
However, Geekie said they’ve been able to catch up with some students during limited visits allow under Phase 2 of the province’s reopening plan.
On June 26, starting at 9:15 a.m., students will be allowed to come one-by-one into the school with their families to pick up their diplomas in private 15-minute ceremonies.
A video with staff and division representatives passing on their congratulations to graduates and announcing recipients of school scholarships and awards is also in the works. The video will also feature graduates’ messages to each other.
