All things green, growing and blossoming will be celebrated into next week leading up to National Garden Day on June 18.

Brandon is holding multiple events starting today to showcase the collective green thumb of the city as part of its Garden Days festivities leading up to June 18.

According to a news release, the city’s parks and recreation department has partnered with the Brandon Garden Club, Westman Gardeners, Bee City Brandon, the Green Spot Home and Garden, Brandon Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation and Westoba Credit Union to host several garden-centred activities for residents to enjoy.

Listed on the city’s website for the week are multiple workshops, promotions at local businesses and honouring local garden heroes who make Brandon’s garden culture possible.

On Monday, the Western Manitoba Regional Library will host a family craft time with sunflowers starting at 4:30 p.m.

The following Tuesday will be a tidy-up initiative, where residents are being encouraged to take just a few minutes to help clean up their neighbourhood.

The Green Spot will host a gardening workshop on Wednesday.

Bee City Brandon is hosting a presentation on native bees and other pollinators at the Riverbank Discovery Centre starting at 2 p.m. On the same day, a presentation on the history of local horticulture and the environment will be at the Daly House starting at 7 p.m.

No events are planned for Friday, but people are encouraged to take pictures of themselves working in their gardens and post them to social media.

This all leads to the main event, National Garden Day, at Stanley Park on Saturday. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the city is planning a free barbecue, plant giveaway, a First Peoples gardening exhibition, children’s entertainment, lawn bowling and the spray park will be open.

In previous comments, Brady Dane, co-ordinator for the city’s parks and recreation department, said the city has about 1,000 vegetables and other plants it’s been growing in its greenhouses to be given away at the park event on a first-come, first-served basis.

Local garden heroes nominated by members of the public will also be honoured by the city with a public display.
