Manitoba Hydro will replace a power pole near the intersection of 18th Street North and Outback Drive on March 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. using implosion sleeves, which look and sound like fireworks.
“Implosion sleeves are metal tubes lined with explosive; the end of each conductor goes into the tube,” the Crown corporation’s media release stated. “When detonated, the force of the implosion fuses the conductors together permanently and safely. Previous methods using hydraulic pumps to crimp connectors together took hours — implosion sleeves do a better job and take seconds.”
This process will create loud bangs and flashes similar to fireworks, but residents are advised they don’t need to worry.
Workers will give nearby homes and businesses as much advance notice as possible and loud horns will sound before each implosion.
