Brandon School Division officials decided to move a Grade 5/6 class from Meadows School to remote learning on Wednesday after public health officials advised them of a possible COVID-19 outbreak.

According to a letter addressed to parents on Tuesday, Meadows principal David Lim clarified that this action is being made out of an abundance of caution and an official outbreak has not been declared by public health.

Lim revealed the Grade 5/6 class will remain in remote learning until the end of the year, with students set to return to in-person instruction on Jan. 6, 2022.

“School work will be shared via TEAMS or through emailed remote learning packages,” Lim wrote. “Some packages have already been distributed, if you have not received a package or require a laptop please contact the school at 204-729-3988.”

As of Wednesday afternoon, the province’s COVID tracking map indicated Meadows is enduring at least three cases in the two weeks prior to Dec. 12.

The COVID exposure at Meadows isn’t strictly limited to a Grade 5/6 cohort, since a letter addressed to parents on Monday revealed at least one confirmed case in a kindergarten class as well.

The provincial government has registered at least 1,983 COVID cases in K-12 schools since the 2021-22 academic year began on Sept. 7.
