Brandon Sun photographer Tim Smith was nominated in the local reporting category at the National Newspaper Awards for his series capturing a mother’s battle with breast cancer.

“I’m just honoured to be included amongst the company of such great work from across the country,” said Smith, who was in attendance Friday evening at the Sheraton Centre in Toronto.

The three-part series featured Cheryl Mauthe, who was diagnosed with breast cancer, and her shared experience with her son Colin, who was diagnosed with leukemia. Mauthe battled cancer as she looked after Colin and her daughter Emily. After undergoing chemotherapy and a bilateral mastectomy, Mauthe was declared cancer-free.

In the past, Smith said the series was “an emotionally difficult project to work on, but ultimately one with a positive outcome.”

As great as the recognition is, Smith is quick to point out that “it’s more of an honour to see all of the feedback that the project has gotten and how it has given Cheryl, Colin and their family a voice.”

He added that when it came to editing and laying out the piece, it was a team effort among journalists at the Brandon Sun. Smith also thanked his family for their support during the project.

“Congratulations to the winners and also to Tim for producing such outstanding work. It represents the very best in community journalism,” said publisher Eric Lawson.

The Moncton Times & Transcript took home the NNA for local reporting for its coverage of the deadly RCMP shootings last year.

This year alone, Smith was a finalist for photojournalist of the year and snagged a total of four awards, including first place in the social issues category at the News Photographers Association of Canada’s 2014 National Pictures of the Year with a photograph of Mauthe, who begins to break down on the operating room table before undergoing a mastectomy.

He also received an honourable mention in the feature multimedia category from the National Press Photographers Association and jointly won awards of excellence in the best use of multimedia category from the association alongside Winnipeg Free Press multimedia editor Melissa Tait for the series.
