Radics Chrysler Plymouth has been sold to the Murray Auto Group and will relocate to Richmond Avenue, said Doug Murray, general manager of Murray Chevrolet Cadillac GMC.
The Chrysler dealership’s staff were told of the sale on Monday and will remain downtown until construction of a new General Motors dealership building is complete.
"We were just looking for something to put into our existing building, and felt like that would be a good fit," Murray said.
However, the consolidation must wait until after the old General Motors dealership, built in 1975, is renovated to meet the Chrysler image standards, Murray said.
"It’s going to take a fair number of changes to move into there," Murray said. "There’s always cost to moving, but I already had a building sitting here that’s a pretty good building that’s served us well for a lot of years. It was just getting small for us. I was just glad to be able to utilize it. We’ve had a few renovations and additions to it over the years."
Once the move is complete, Murray Auto Group will have an inventory of 600 new and used vehicles and 85,000 square feet of buildings on Richmond Avenue near 18th Street.
The existing Radics building and property will be put up for sale, Murray said.
While most of Murray Auto Group’s holdings deal in General Motors products, there is one Hyundai dealership in Winnipeg, set up in 2007. This will be the first Chrysler operation in the firm, which operates about 20 dealerships in Western Canada and Nova Scotia.
About 30 staff will be moving from the Radics Chrysler operation to the new location, though not all of them will be in the same building. Body shop employees will be moved into the new GM dealership, where a much larger facility is being constructed.
"We will operate (the Chrysler dealership) at the current location (on Princess Avenue) for a while, so it will continue to have the body shop there," Murray said. "We’ve made a much bigger body shop in our new facility so the body work will go there."
Murray declined to disclose the sale price for the Chrysler dealership.
Larry Radics of Radics Chrysler Plymouth, was contacted by the Sun about the sale but refused comment.
