A man accused in a string of violent incidents was denied bail Thursday morning.
Gary Shingoose, 35, is charged in the incidents from 2021. He is presumed innocent until proven guilty and the charges have not been tested in court.
Crown attorney Melania Cannon told court that on May 17, 2021, a woman reported that a man had assaulted her adult son.
The victim had a black eye and a bump on his head, Cannon said.
The man told police he didn’t know who was assaulting him at first, but recognized his assailant’s voice, she said. Another person also identified the suspect.
Shingoose is also charged in relation to a separate incident on Sept. 8.
In that case, Cannon said, two people armed with a knife confronted a man who was standing outside the Rossburn liquor store and robbed him of a bottle of vodka.
One hour later, police in Waywayseecappo First Nation received a report that a person had been stabbed, and arrived at the scene to find a man with a three-inch cut to his abdomen.
Cannon said the cut was deep enough that officers could see what they believed were the man’s internal organs.
Once paramedics arrived, the complainant alleged that he had been stabbed with a machete before the suspect fled, she said.
The final Shingoose is charged in connection with was on Dec. 23, 2021.
Cannon said police were called to a house in Waywayseecappo at approximately 5:30 p.m.
When they arrived, they found blood in the snow outside, on the stairs and at the door.
Inside the house, they found a man lying on he floor with multiple cuts to his head and ear — a wound that “divided the ear into two pieces,” according to the Crown attorney.
The man had serious injuries and needed multiple stitches, she said. The vicitim’s son said his father was assaulted with a metal pipe.
Cannon opposed Shingoose being released on bail, saying he is charged with being the aggressor in several “attacks.”
Defence lawyer Norm Sims said Shingoose disputes the Crown’s version of events in several of the incidents and denies being there for the May 17, 2021 assault.
Sims proposed a bail plan that would have the accused under a 24-hour curfew, and under conditions not to be in either Waywayseecappo or in Brandon.
Judge Shauna Hewitt-Michta called the accusations very serious and said she had concerns with releasing Shingoose on bail.
The bail plan wasn’t bad, but Hewitt-Michta said she couldn’t get around the “string” of violent allegations.
She denied his release on bail.
Shingoose is scheduled to appear in court in early September.
