The City of Brandon is looking for a builder for an expansion of Brandon police headquarters.

The expansion includes new holding cells at the station, a permanent addition after the police service has had standalone temporary holding cells since 2021.

The 786-page tender package was released on Thursday.

The provincial government ended its direct lockup agreement with Brandon police in June 2020, at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Previously, police housed detainees at the Brandon Correctional Centre, but now have to house them at the police station before appearing in court.

The direct lockup agreement was originally suspended to keep COVID-19 out of the provincial jail system, but the change was later made permanent. The province then contributed $4.4 million for the police service to build both temporary and permanent holding cells.

Temporary holding cells were built in 2021 behind the Brandon Police Service headquarters.

The City of Brandon previously released a tender to relocate the temporary cells block in late 2021 so the permanent cells can be constructed that location.

During the October 2021 Brandon Police Board meeting, police Chief Wayne Balcaen said the permanent cells are slated to be completed in 2023. Work is expected to be completed by July 31, 2023, according to the tender document.

The construction tender is supposed to close on June 23.
