Const. Jacob Clement of the Manitoba RCMP is scheduled to appear before Brandon’s provincial court Aug. 12 as the result of a review conducted by the Independent Investigation Unit.

According to a Friday news release from the police watchdog group, Clement was originally put under scrutiny following an incident that took place in late June 2020, when the then off-duty officer discharged his service weapon while at home.

No one was hurt as a result of this discharge.

However, following a lengthy review of the incident, IIU’s civilian director ultimately concluded this investigation by determining that “there are reasonable grounds to believe an offence occurred under the Criminal Code.”

Clement has been charged with careless use of a firearm, which violates Section 86(1) of the Criminal Code

Now that this case is before the court, the IIU said in Friday’s news release the organization will make no further comment on the matter.
