Hey there, time traveller!

For swimmers in Brandon, the wait is almost over.
The Brandon Community Sportsplex Pool is scheduled to welcome back the public by December after nearly two years of being closed due to the pandemic, needing repairs and delays to those repairs.
The pool has been home to several aquatic activities, including the Bluefins competitive swim team, Aquafit and the Red Cross Learn to Swim program.
Perry Roque, director for parks and recreation services, said it has been a long and challenging time for the city but hopes this is the end and they can get back to enjoying water sports in the Sportsplex again.
“We are filling the pool again today [Wednesday] and that will take a few days,” he explained. “After that, we need to have it pass safety inspections to have it recommissioned.”
With safety and recommissioning expected to pass, he explained they are calling the groups that use the pool to let them decide if they want to transfer sessions for the winter season, starting in December, or request a full refund.
He stressed the pool is a critical piece of infrastructure for the city due to all the activities that take place there.
“It certainly has been missed. People with mobility issues really benefit from the use of the pool. For many, it could be their only form of physical activity. The Bluefins are preparing to restart their swim club and have their program running again.”
The pool was slated to reopen after COVID-19 public health orders were relaxed, but the main drain was the need to repair the facility. Roque explained they brought in contractors to do the work and originally planned to open in September.
They ran a pressure test on the pipes and discovered the plumbing joints were not holding. That meant they had to redo all the pipes and joints and further delay opening.
Another pressure test conducted on Tuesday was deemed a success.
There are several more steps that have to be taken before full reopening. Roque explained the pool’s mechanical components need to be recommissioned and tested to ensure they are working properly, then the city needs to receive permits to be legally allowed to operate once again.
Residents can start making facility reservation requests. Information for public swim, lap swim, and aquafit is available at brandon.ca/pool. Information on Red Cross swim lessons and aquatic leadership courses is available at brandon.ca/swimming-lessons.
