BOYS

SOUTHWEST COUGARS

The second-place Cougars (15-4-0) hosted a pair of Winnipeg teams on the weekend at Souris/Glenwood Memorial Complex, facing off against the third-place Bruins (12-6-2) and the fourth-place Wild (11-4-3).

On Sunday against the Wild, Regan Anderson scored twice and Kylan Anderson, Kole Beard and added singles as the Cougars struck three times in the second period for a 5-2 victory.

Micky Gross made 28 saves for Southwest, with Dawson Groen and Jacob Armstrong combining to stop 28 shots for Winnipeg.

On Saturday against the Bruins, Regan Anderson scored his second goal of the game to tie it 4-4 midway through the third period and Bryan Laing scored the winner with 5:05 remaining as the Cougars earned a 5-4 victory.

Sebastian Stone and Tyson Draper also scored for the Cougars. Evan Svoboda made 24 saves for Southwest, with Justin Perreault blocking 37 shots for Winnipeg.

The Cougars have the week off, next seeing action when they continue a four-game home stand against the Eastman Selects on Saturday, Dec. 9 at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 10 at 1:30 p.m.

YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS

The 10th-place Chiefs (6-8-4) had a tough week, earning a single point in three games at the Shoal Lake Communiplex.

On Sunday, Colby Asselstine scored both goals for the Chiefs but the Bruins staked a 4-0 lead en route to a 7-2 victory. Connor Rapley made 40 saves for Yellowhead, with Leyton Medwick blocking 22 shots for Winnipeg.

On Saturday, Riley Swereda, Rowin Richmond and Max Collyer gave the Chiefs a 3-0 lead but the Wild responded with six unanswered goals in a 6-3 victory. Kieran Madill made 29 saves for Yellowhead, with Jacob Armstrong blocking 21 shots for Winnipeg.

On Tuesday, Cash Clarkson and Maddox Shindle gave Parkland a 2-0 lead but Max Collyer replied with a pair of goals for Yellowhead to send the game to overtime. The game later went to a shootout, with Rangers forward Tavyn Boychuk scoring the only goal for a 3-2 victory.

Both Yellowhead’s Connor Rapley and Parkland’s Chase Glover made 25 saves through 65 minutes, with Glover stopping all three shots he faced in the shootout.

Yellowhead visits Brandon on Wednesday in its only action of the week. The Wheat Kings return the favour at the Shoal Lake Communiplex on Tuesday, Dec. 5 at 8 p.m., and the Chiefs host the Interlake Lightning on Saturday, Dec. 9 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 10 at 1 p.m.

PARKLAND RANGERS

After the mid-week shootout victory over the Chiefs, the eighth-place Rangers (7-9-3) met the sixth-place Winnipeg Thrashers (11-6-0) for a pair of games at Dauphin’s Credit Union Place.

On Sunday, Quinten Fisk’s second goal of the game with 2:14 remaining lifted the Rangers to a 5-4 victory over the Thrashers. Cade Legaarden, Maddox Shindle and Quinten Fisk also scored in a wild game that saw Parkland trail 2-0 in the first period and lead 4-2 in the third period.

Chase Glover made 31 saves for Parkland, with Taye Timmerman stopping 13 shots for Winnipeg.

On Saturday, Tavyn Boychuk scored twice and Ryder Gardner and Landyn Garton sniped as the Rangers took a 4-1 lead, but the Thrashers score six goals in the second period en route to a 10-5 victory. Hayden Seib scored Parkland’s other goal.

Ethan Myhre and Chase Glover made 31 saves for Parkland, with Austin Kindrat and Taye Timmerman blocking 23 shots for Winnipeg.

The Rangers have the weekend off, returning to action in Winnipeg when they meet the Bruins at Southdale Community Centre on Saturday, Dec. 9 at 4 p.m., and the Thrashers at Gateway Recreation Centre on Sunday, Dec. 10 at 1 p.m.

BRANDON WHEAT KINGS

The first-place Wheat Kings (16-0-1) are enjoying a 10-day break between games.

They had the weekend off, and return to the ice to host the Yellowhead Chiefs on Wednesday at J&G Homes Arena. They visit the Shoal Lake Communiplex on Tuesday, Dec. 5 at 8 p.m.

That weekend, they host the Pembina Valley Hawks on Friday, Dec. 8 at 7:30 p.m., and visit the Winnipeg Wild at Hockey For All Centre on Saturday, Dec. 9 at 7:15 p.m.

GIRLS

YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS

The third-place Chiefs (8-4-1) hosted a pair of games at the Shoal Lake Communiplex over the weekend in the Manitoba Female Hockey League U18 AAA.

On Saturday against the fifth-place Eastman Selects (7-5-1), Sophia Heidinger scored in overtime as the visitors emerged with a 3-2 victory. Hanna Reagh and Dara Thompson each scored for the Chiefs.

Clair Merckx made 38 saves for Yellowhead, with Addison Tomes stopping 22 shots for Eastman.

On Friday against the Westman Wildcats, Kirby Gray scored her second goal with 5:22 remaining as the Chiefs topped the Wildcats 4-3.

Nadia Nickel and Presley Hodson also scored for Yellowhead, with Paige Crossley, Callie Hilhorst and Reese Schutte responding for Westman.

Natalie Rampton made 30 saves for Yellowhead, with Kylie Hack blocking 24 shots for Westman.

The Chiefs continue their four-game home stand next weekend, facing the Central Plains Capitals on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and the Winnipeg Avros on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

WESTMAN WILDCATS

The fourth-place Wildcats (7-6-1) played their only game of the weekend against the Chiefs.

Their next league action comes at Hartney Arena in mid-December when they meet the Interlake Lightning on Saturday, Dec. 16 at 7:30 p.m., and the Winnipeg on Sunday, Dec. 17 at 2:30 p.m. Their last action before Christmas is a visit to the Niverville Recreation Centre on Saturday, Dec. 23 at noon.
