• 60 YEARS AGO — Four Brandon rinks are still creating the big stir in the Manitoba Curling Association Bonspiel in Winnipeg. Only 20 rinks hold perfect marks from the 39 that started the day. Ivan Carlisle of the Brandon Club and Gerry MacKay, Jim Williamson and Ralph Nye of the Brandon Golf and Country Club all won twice to bring their records to 7-0.
• 50 YEARS AGO — Neepawa Natives wrapped up the North Division pennant of the SouthWest Hockey League with an 11-3 victory over the visiting Elkhorn Canadians. Lloyd Cavers paced the winners with a three-goal performance.
• 40 YEARS AGO — Lisa Pepper and Nichole Van De Ponseele both scored three times as Boissevain defeated Strathclair 7-4 to win the gold medal in girls ringette play at the Westman Winter Games in Rivers.
• 30 YEARS AGO — The Wawanesa Jets and Killarney Shamrocks settled for a 3-3 tie in the Tiger Hills Hockey League. Marty Burgess, Travis Cline and Scott Brooks scored for the Jets while Jim Bartley, Les Keyes and Sheldon Verspeek replied for Killarney.
• 20 YEARS AGO — The Brandon Sun learned late last night that SouthWest Hockey League referee-in-chief Wendell Reimer has instructed the senior loop’s referees to boycott all games beginning tonight if the league administration doesn’t increase a suspension recently handed down to a player given a match penalty for verbal abuse.
• 10 YEARS AGO — For the second straight year, a Brandon team has won the Golden Gals provincial curling championship. Joyce McDougall and her Brandon Curling Club squad of Barb Withers, Audrey Fleming and Mavis Brown stole one in the eighth end to defeat Winnipeg’s Rita Van De Vyvere 9-8 in the final at Swan River.
