WINNIPEG — A Calgary man has been arrested for human smuggling after he allegedly picked up a group of men who had walked across the border into Canada near Emerson.

Manitoba RCMP border investigators were called by United States Border Patrol, which spotted a group walking north along a rail line toward the border at about 3:45 a.m. on Jan. 27, Mounties said Tuesday.

The American border agents noted the people were wearing winter clothes and estimated the group would reach the Canadian border within the hour, RCMP said.

The RCMP investigators rushed to the area and stopped a rental vehicle at the intersection of provincial roads 201 and 200 near Dominion City.

Seven men, who RCMP determined were citizens of the Republic of Chad in north-central Africa, and the vehicle’s driver were taken into custody.

The driver, 49-year-old Saleh Youssouf of Calgary, was charged with human smuggling under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. He was held in custody after appearing in court in Winnipeg last week.

The other men were arrested under the Customs Act and handed over to the Canada Border Services Agency at the Emerson border crossing.

Mounties and Canadian border agents are still investigating.
