Former Brandon Wheat Kings captain Nate Danielson of the Portland Winterhawks has been named the Western Hockey League’s player of the week.
Danielson had a goal and six assists to lead all players with seven points in three games of the Western Conference final against the Prince George Cougars.
The 19-year-old Red Deer, Alta., product, whose team is up 3-2 in the series as it heads back to northern British Columbia, was selected by the Detroit Red Wings last summer. Brandon dealt him to Portland at the trade deadline for a package of players and picks.
The rookie of the week is 17-year-old Prince George forward Hunter Laing of Kelowna, who scored an important goal in Game 5 to extend their series.
Game 6 of the Portland-Prince George series ended after deadline last night. If needed, Game 7 is set for tonight.
In net, Evan Gardner of the Saskatoon Blades has been named goaltender of the week for the week after posting a 2-1-1-0 record, a 3.21 goals-against average and a .904 save percentage in the Eastern Conference final against the Moose Jaw Warriors.
Gardner, an 18-year-old product of Fort St. John, B.C., is a nominee for the league’s rookie of the year award. Game 7 of that series is set for tonight at 8 p.m. (CDT).
