An inmate who is serving time in Stony Mountain Institution has been charged in the death of a 23-year-old man at Brandon Correctional Centre late last year.

Jarrod Paul, 27, has been charged with first-degree murder, Brandon Police Service said yesterday.

On Dec. 29, 2024, at 5:30 p.m., police received call from Brandon Correctional Centre that an inmate had seriously assaulted another inmate.

The victim was transported to Brandon Regional Health Centre but succumbed to his injuries.

Police say the investigation revealed that the victim was repeatedly punched and kicked by his cellmate. The Crown attorney reviewed the case, and a charge of first-degree murder was recently authorized.

The accused was arrested at Stony Mountain Institution and is scheduled to make an appearance in court on Tuesday.
