• 60 YEARS AGO — Alf George and Jack Coates defeated Bill Jackson and Larry Bolan to win the A competition in the Brandon Hotel doubles at the Wheat City Lawn Bowling Club. Harold Tackaberry and Jim Hammond topped Eddie Minions and Bill Fisher 13-11 to win the B competition.
• 50 YEARS AGO — Dwayne Renard, who inherited a job in Virden’s backfield last week when Dale Horn was injured, scored five touchdowns to lead the Golden Bears to a 53-12 romp over Deloraine Colts in high school football action.
• 40 YEARS AGO — Brandon’s Tommy Town Sr., regarded as one of Canada’s top middle and long-distance runners during the 1920s, and Bryan Hextall Sr., head of what is likely Manitoba’s best-known hockey family, will be posthumously inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame.
• 20 YEARS AGO — The Southwest Cougars sent their fans home happy from the first night of their Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League preseason tournament. The Cougars built a 3-0 lead and held on for a 3-2 win over the Central Plains Capitals. Del Cowan, Corey Moore and Curtis Gordon scored for the Cougars.
• 10 YEARS AGO — The Vincent Massey Vikings swept the visiting Neelin Spartans 3-0 (25-22, 25-12, 25- 17) in the varsity girls’ division on the opening night of the Westman High School Volleyball League season.
