The two finals have begun in under-18 AAA hockey in Manitoba.

BOYS

BRANDON (3) vs. WPG BRUINS (1)

The Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League features the No. 1 and No. 3 seeds, an the top seed struck first.

In Game 1 on Saturday at Winnipeg’s Southdale Community Centre, after James Nicholls gave Winnipeg an early lead, Brandon’s Hudson Champagne and Cole Dupuis replied on the power play to put Brandon up 2-1.

But after Crewe Schimnowski tied the game midway through the second period, Antonio Correia pumped the winner in for the Bruins five minutes into the third period and then added an empty netter, both assisted by Western Hockey League Wheat Kings prospect Mason Chubey.

Brandon goalie Urijah Moosetail made 35 saves, while Winnipeg netminder Logan German stopped 28 shots.

Game 2 is at J&G Homes Arena on Monday at 7:30 p.m., and Game 3 is set for the Southdale Community Centre on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

If necessary, Game 4 would be at J&G Homes Arena on Friday at 7:30 p.m., and Game 5 would be at Southdale Community Centre on Sunday at 7 p.m.

GIRLS

EASTMAN (2) vs. WPG ICE (1)

The Manitoba Female Hockey League U18 AAA best-of-five final features the teams with the two best regular season records, and through two games in the final, they’ve both showed why.

In Game 1 at Winnipeg’s Hockey For All Centre on Wednesday, the Selects came out with a statement victory, with Addison Tomes stopping all 18 shots she faced and Delainey Rigaux, Kaitlyn Schroeder, Chloé Carrière, Vayda Rigaux and Mya Grenier sniping in a 5-0 victory.

Delainey Rigaux also had three assists.

Winnipeg’s Gina Plett and Isla Matthews combined to make 35 saves.

In Game 2 at the Niverville Community Resource and Recreation Centre on Sunday afternoon, Chloe Nicolas scored Winnipeg’s first goal of the series early in the second period, and Claire Hudson added an insurance marker later in the frame as the Ice tied the series with a 2-0 victory.

Eastman’s Tomes made 35 saves, with Winnipeg’s Matthews stopping 23 shots for the shutout.

Game 3 is back in Winnipeg on Tuesday at 7:40 p.m., and Game 4 is in Niverville on Thursday at 7:15 p.m., If needed, Game 5 would be in Winnipeg on Sunday, March 29 at 7:15 p.m.
