WINNIPEG – A man was sent to hospital following a chaotic scene in Winnipeg that involved gunfire, a police chase, a standoff, a fire and a hostage-taking.
Police say it began when they were notified before noon Friday that a wanted man was in the St. James neighbourhood.
When officers arrived to execute an arrest warrant, the man bolted from them, leading to a chase on foot.
The suspect then broke into an unrelated home where the three people inside, all believed to be teenagers, became hostages.
At one point a fire broke out, but it was quickly extinguished.
Gunshots were exchanged, the man was arrested trying to flee the house and the hostages were rescued safely.
“Members of the tactical support team arrived and two of the hostages were successfully rescued,β Police Const. Pat Saydak told reporters near where police had blocked off access to the scene.
βIn the process of rescuing the third hostage, it was noticed that the house was on fire. The third hostage was then successfully rescued.β
He would not provide any details about what the warrant was for or information on the suspect.
The neighbourhood was disrupted for hours. About three streets were blocked off by police vehicles and yellow police tape cut off access to many routes.
The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba, the province’s police watchdog, has been informed as per protocol when it comes to serious incidents involving police officers.
This report by The Canadian Press was first published May 29, 2026.
Note to readers:This is a corrected story. A previous version said a man was hospitalized for a gunshot wound, but the shooting has not been confirmed.
