STONY PLAIN – A daycare worker was trapped and taken to hospital Thursday after a van crashed into the building west of Edmonton.
Mounties said 18 children and two staff had been inside Moonlight Montessori Academy in Stony Plain at the time.
Police said the one employee, a woman in her 20s, had non-life-threatening injuries. Everyone else was OK.
Darren Buryniuk, whose outfitting business is next door to the daycare, said his children, ages one and three, were inside the daycare when it happened.
He didn’t hear the crash, he said, but a daycare employee rushed over and told him the kitchen roof had caved in and another worker was trapped.
“He was pretty frantic, as one could expect,” said Buryniuk, adding he rushed over but could only get the kitchen door open a few centimetres.
“I could just see smoke coming out and smell the burning rubber. But luckily the (employee) was still conscious and could talk. And they weren’t OK, but they were still conscious. So that was good.”
Buryniuk said the woman was speaking a language other than English, and he didn’t know what she was saying.
The van had crashed through an outside wall, said Buryniuk, and no one could get in that way, either. Not long after, firefighters arrived and got the woman out, he said.
Police said the van’s driver, a man in his 30s, was transported to hospital and is expected to recover.
The area was also evacuated for several hours due to a gas leak.
The Town of Stony Plain said on its website that the children at the daycare were taken to a community centre and picked up by parents or guardians.
Police are investigating.
“We want to take this moment to thank the employees of the daycare for working so quickly to ensure the safety of the children in their care. The actions of these workers, as well as quick response from our partners at the Stony Plain Fire Department, were instrumental to ensuring the safety of all involved,” Insp. Kevin McGillivray said in a news release.
Buryniuk said his three-year-old daughter is still dealing with what happened.
“She’s asking the tough questions right now. So like, ‘Is the teacher gonna be OK?'” Buryniuk said, explaining that he doesn’t have a firm answer to give her.
“Well, it’s just to say I hope so.”
