CALGARY – An 11-year-old boy has died in a suspected drowning during a school field trip in southeastern Alberta.

Police say they received a call Monday afternoon about a child missing during a school outing at Echo Dale Regional Park in Medicine Hat.

Staff Sgt. Darren Lole says officers, school officials and park staff searched the area and drones were used to look over the large lake in the park.

He says the boy was found in the water within an hour, and he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The city says all municipal pools and aquatic facilities are closed until further notice.

It says there will be a thorough review of what happened.

“Our heartfelt condolences are with the child’s family, friends and all those affected by this tragic loss,” said Joe Hutter, interim city manager.

“I can’t begin to imagine the grief this family is experiencing.”

The Medicine Hat Public School Division said help would be available for students and parents.
