Canada came from behind to defeat Finland 6-3 in the semifinal of the Hlinka-Gretzky cup on Friday.
Canada plays the United States in the gold-medal game today at 6 p.m.
Finland opened the game by outshooting Canada 11-1 on the way to taking a 1-0 thanks to a power play goal scored by Olli Kylmala five minutes into the game. Niklas Borgstrom and Lenni Kokkonen picked up assists on the opening goal.
Calgary native Landon Dupont equalized for Canada with just under two minutes remaining in the opening frame. Kayden Stroeder and Jaakko Wycisk were credited with assists on the play.
Max Poikela put Finland back ahead early in the second period while Kokkonen was credited with his second assist of the game.
From there, Canada gained momentum, slowly taking over the contest. Benjamin Veitch — who hails from St. John’s, N.L. scored seven minutes into the second period.
Malik L’Italien gave Canada its first lead in the contest two-and-a-half minutes into the final frame on a long shot from the point that Finland challenged for offside. The goal was upheld.
Wycisk made it 4-2 on a nifty play in front that was assisted by Veitch.
True to their identity, the Finnish squad did not go quietly. Kylmala scored his second goal of the contest tucking the puck home on a nice pass from Luca Santala just over halfway through the third period. Paavo Fugleberg also got an assist on the goal.
With under two minutes remaining in the contest Veitch capitalized on the empty net from centre ice to secure the win for Canada.
Canadian goaltender Leif Oaten made 24 saves in the contest.
