EDMONTON – Three people have been charged with killing a 12-year-old boy who police say was kidnapped from Edmonton.
RCMP announced the arrests Wednesday.
They said they received a 911 call believed to be from the victim, Fiasal Hussein, on the early morning of Aug. 6.
The caller said he had been abducted and was injured.
Reception in the area was poor and the call was choppy so it was unclear what was happening, said Sgt. James McConnell.
Hours later, officers found the boy’s body in the area of Calling Lake, about 190 kilometres north of Edmonton.
Police said they also located a stolen vehicle and that there had been evidence of an attack.
An autopsy determined the death was a homicide.
“It is not immediately clear to us why people would take a young 12-year-old boy under false pretenses to rural Alberta and murder him,” McConnell said.
He added that the boy had been lured from his home the day before he was found.
The three accused were arrested Saturday in Edmonton.
Cole Morin 34, and Curtis Brown, 36, are charged with first-degree murder and kidnapping. Rachel Stuart, 36, faces a charge of second-degree murder. Police said she was in a common-law relationship with Brown.
McConnell said the victim had been involved with people who had criminal ties, including the accused, but did not give details.
“We have a 12-year-old boy that had his whole life ahead of him, whose life was taken. I can’t think of any circumstances that would support — or behaviour that would warrant — such an act,” he said.
“Parents aren’t supposed to be burying children, and that’s what we have in this case.”
The accused are expected back in court in November.
