For some time we had heard rumours that Manitoba Finance Minister Rosann Wowchuk would not not run in October’s provincial election, a decision she officially confirmed on Monday. Wowchuk said her decision to retire was due to the poor health of a family member.
While we have often disagreed with the policies and comments made by Wowchuk during her tenure as agriculture minister and more recently in the finance department, there’s no doubt she has worked very hard on behalf of Manitobans.
To quote retiring Brandon West Progressive Conservative MLA Rick Borotsik in his comments to the Sun, “You respect opposition politicians and, quite frankly, Rosann Wowchuk deserves the respect of the opposition and respect of her own party.”
Quite right.
Wowchuk also indicated she will continue in her roles as deputy premier and minister of finance, Hydro and crown corporations until Oct. 4. But we would be quite surprised if Premier Greg Selinger didn’t do a little reshuffling and give her duties to someone else before the election.
While she may deserve the party’s respect, Selinger has nothing to gain by leaving her there.
