It would appear that the notion of a downtown casino in Brandon has been abandoned, at least according to the provincial election candidates running in Brandon East and Brandon West who answered our “Question of the Week” segment published on Saturday.
Whether they toed the party line, like Brandon West NDP hopeful Jim Murray who regurgitated the government’s actions since 1999 on the casino issue verbatim, or they deferred to the people like Brandon West Liberal candidate Shaun Cameron who said he’d respect the plebiscite held by the City of Brandon in 2008 — no candidate openly suggested that the casino plan was worth another look.
However, while the politicians may not want to bring up the topic again, we have heard rumblings of certain folks in town who are still pursuing the idea of bringing a casino to Brandon, even as delays continue to dog the start of construction for the First Nation-owned Spirit Sands Casino south of Carberry.
And we also note that minds, like provincial governments, are subject to change.
