If folks think the federal NDP leadership race is a snoozefest — and can’t even begin to stay awake for the Republican debates in the United States — then there’s another party contest that’s gonna guarantee to bore you to snore.

It’s the “race” to see who’s going to be the next leader of the Manitoba Progressive Conservatives.

The big story last week was that somebody wasn’t running.

And for many folks, hearing the “news” that Winnipeg South MP Rod Bruinooge has decided against taking a run at the Manitoba Progressive Conservative leadership would cause an eyelid to droop just a bit.

And maybe a yawn to be stifled.

Hugh McFadyen’s decision to resign as leader of the Manitoba Progressive Conservatives after the party’s poor showing in last fall’s provincial election has created an opportunity for the struggling party to redefine and redeem itself.

But if the people kicking tires on the old Blue sedan are any indication as to who might lead the party against the ridiculously electable NDP, we’re in for a long sleepy ride until the party chooses a new leader Oct. 27.

Several have let it be known that they are weighing a bid for the leadership. According to the Free Press, that group includes Tuxedo MLA Heather Stefanson, former MP and provincial cabinet minister Brian Pallister and Jerry Cianflone, founder of the Pizza Hotline and Cafe 22 chains and Steinbach MLA Kelvin Goertzen, the Tory justice critic.

Some pundits have hoped some other Tory MPs — such as St. Boniface MP Shelly Glover or Portage-Lisgar MP Candice Hoeppner — would take a look at leading the provincial party.

There are also a few rumours out there that at least one prominent local Tory party member from near Brandon might make a move, but that hasn’t been substantiated.

McFadyen has said he will carry on as leader until his successor is chosen this fall.

Or, more likely we suggest, until he gets a federal appointment.

Guess he wasn’t Senate material.
