Re: Brandon’s upcoming election
I have been closely following the situation in Winnipeg, where a city councillor has been charged with some serious crimes.
The individual has been asked to step down, but Manitoba rules only allow for this if the person is convicted of a crime.
It is nice to see many new faces apply to be a councillor in the City of Brandon.
It is my understanding that to run for a council anywhere in Manitoba, any checks such as a criminal record check or a child abuse registry check are not required.
It is time for Manitoba to review this practice and ask for — particularly — a criminal record check. I know councillors attend gatherings where children are present, and I believe both should be required.
