We chose to move to Brandon about seven years ago. There is one lingering, perplexing question I have. I’m wondering if someone can answer it.

Why is voter apathy is so high in this city? I understand that the turn out for voting is typically low, sometimes less than 20 per cent of eligible voters.

Do most people not understand or care about the right that we have to vote and choose the people who lead us? Is there just so much cynicism in this region about politics that few people care? What alternative governance do the non-voters want, if not democracy?

The right to vote in Canada at all levels, federal, provincial and municipal, has been hard won by people who came before us. It is a right and a privilege that not everyone in the world has. Every generation has to work hard to maintain that right.

Why couldn’t Brandon become the leading Canadian community known for the highest voting levels in the country? Why be satisfied with a reputation for abysmal voting levels and a leader in voter apathy? That is no reputation that a democratically based city should have!

So, folks, become informed and get out to vote! Overcome your apathy!

Exercise your right and privilege!
