Maybe these days it’s more Vancouver and Montreal, but when I was heading to university, all the people my age were talking about moving to Calgary.
Getting out of Brandon — as soon as they could — was just assumed, and the city of Calgary was said to be the place where the grass was greenest. I’m not sure if it’s still the case, but for a while, all of my friends talked about how they would run into each other at Calgary Hitmen games, which they would regularly attend when the Wheat Kings were in town.
These days, though, I have certain evidence that Brandon is better than Calgary.
To wit, I offer the Tale of Two University Student Presidents.
Because I am a civic-minded fellow, I sit on some Brandon University boards of directors, and on a couple of them, I’m joined by the president of the students’ union.
During my younger days, when I was involved with the student newspaper (shoutout, The Quill), we fought tooth-and-nail with the students’ union, and I was convinced that it was filled with know-nothing weasels.
Recently, however, I’ve softened my stance. And this year, I’ve found BUSU president Deandra Tousignant to be very nice, unfailingly reasonable, and completely worthy of her Woman of Distinction Award, presented Thursday night.
As evidence that Brandon is now better than Calgary, I will compare and contrast our award-winning university students’ union president with the former student president of Mount Royal University, in Calgary.
From the National Post: "Calgary university shocked after former student president charged in bank robbery"
Yup — we’ve got an award winner, and in Calgary, they’re tracking down suspected bank robbers (she was arrested, with a weapon and the money — and her dog — in the getaway car shortly after the robbery). She is, of course, presumed innocent.
I’ll note, though, that police say she was wanted for several other alleged crimes, including fraud, forgery and breach of probation. And it appears, if you read between the lines of the National Post story, that she was forced out as student president when the rest of the council uncovered "anomalies" that she couldn’t explain.
I’ll also note that BUSU elections are set for March 8 and 9 at the university. Deandra will leave fairly good-sized shoes to fill. But students, I urge you, just DON’T ELECT A BANK ROBBER!
