Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 19/12/2017 (3029 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.
The Association of Manitoba Municipalities held its annual convention at Brandon’s Keystone Centre in November. The three-day event is the annual general meeting of the entire AMM membership. I popped in to snap some pictures on the evening of the Gala Dinner.
The AMM office is based in Portage la Prairie, and the convention alternates between Winnipeg and Brandon. This event is the largest of the year and brings together approximately 900 delegates. This year, Chris Goertzen wants the province to commit to a 40-40-20 infrastructure cost-sharing framework, he told the crowd on the opening day of the convention.
Goertzen, the mayor of Steinbach, said “the only way to make sure every dollar allocated to Manitoba is fully utilized is to negotiate a fair and full cost-share from the province.”
Among other issues discussed was the arrival of the implementation of cannabis legislation in July and how this will affect municipalities.
Attending the conference over the three days were elected reeves, mayors, councillors and CAOs, and resolutions were voted on by the delegates that will then form the AMM’s lobbying position for the coming year.
This quote was taken directly from the AMM website: “The AMM looks at what the future holds for municipal government and is trying to help municipalities meet the challenges facing them. The association provides the support and leadership needed to promote strong, functional councils that truly represent the order of government “closest to the people.”
I looked at that powerful statement and the history of how AMM came to be. I also looked closely at all the pictures featured on the website and noticed one similarity between all of them — all male and mainly white. If the feel good statement, “closest to the people” rings true then perhaps changing up the website to feature some of the other faces that also represent Manitoba might be a wise idea.
